BMCU Pursues Rainbow
Although the advertised rationale was a picnic at Trial Lake, a BMCU outreach delegation on July 12 had as its secret motive a rendezvous with the Rainbow Family in the Uintas, to assess shared interest in nostalgic British vehicles. Unfortunately, the Family had vacated without a forwarding address, so Plan A was reverted to.

The temperature was hotter than a Jaguar radiator in August, and the sun was merciless. Nevertheless, the route devised by substitute leader Doug Inman was creative (through locked gates past mega-buck homes in Deer Crest), and painstakingly crafted (sample computer generated step: "proceed 32 yards; estimated time 49 seconds").

The lunch destination at the Upper Provo River waterfall below Trial Lake on the Mirror Lake Highway was as beautiful as ever, though the flow was much reduced, due to the current drought conditions. Attending were Gary, Sandy and Margaux Lindstrom, Bruce Schilling and Tyler, Joe Chou and Ruby, J. Sorenson, Kathy and Floyd Inman, Todd and Connie Pixton, Bill and Julie Van Moorhem, Kevin McCloskey and Jay Shaw, Nick and Carol Coleman, Kendall and Connie Dewsnup, Bill Walton, Scott Welty and family, Sharon and Dan Forster.

GoF West 2003
RHS Queen Mary Long Beach, California
GoF West 2003 was held on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California, July 21-25. The BMCU had a rather small representation consisting of David and Muriel Machovec; Steven Nelson, and Kathy and Floyd Inman. Considering the venue we will consider this a huge turnout, as rallying around the Los Angeles Freeway System is not the most attractive of ideas.

The event management changed the order of events somewhat from previous years, in that the rallye was held on a Tuesday and the Car Show on Wednesday. This change didn’t seem to excite those who had spent the better part of Sunday and Monday driving to get there.

The rallye began with a drive down Ocean Boulevard in Long Beach, across the Terminal Island Bridge, through the Long Beach Harbor District, across the Vincent Thomas Bridge and into the Palos Verde area. I mention this for those familiar with the area to give an idea of “Rallye in Traffic”. This area is congested with the harbor truck traffic, so we started off with the smell of diesel fuel and heat.

We proceeded into the traffic of two lane roads of Palos Verde. Once we got past the congestion caused by an accident and our LBCs vapor locking we preceded into the coastal regions for some magnificent views. Then it was back to the Queen through the traffic where we prepared our cars for the Show on Wednesday.

As could be expected in the Los Angeles area, the best part of the trip was meeting with and lying to all of our old and dear friends.

For the first year in many the BMCU did not come away with any trophies. Hyacinth was not eligible as she won Premier Class last year and had to show as “Display Only”; David had won the Mechanics Contest two of the past three years (finishing second the third) so decided to give someone a chance. As for the Sacagawea (Lady that drives the greatest distance in a “T” Type) Muriel had it won but the event planners forgot to award it, so maybe she will receive it in the mail as she did a few years back.

Well, there is always next year! ! ! And what a trip it should be! ! !

BMCU 17, Stingers 3,Sidewinders 0
BMCU Night at the Stingers was great fun, with a terrific ball game, home team win, and BMCU's presence acknowledged by the PA announcer and scoreboard. Tickets were kindly provided by Skool Lunch and Baileys Service, with group seating in a shady section of the upper deck overlooking the Wasatch Mountains.

Cheering the victory were Dan Kasha, Marty Van Nood, Terri Kaufman, Pugs and Diane Pivirotto, Dan and Sharon Forster, Kendall & Connie Dewsnup, Mark & Joyce Noeltner, Moni Schwaerzler and Bill, Chelsea and Liam Davis, and Gary and Sandy Lindstrom.

Alpine Loop Run
"Sweet Sixteen"
The BMCU's 16th annual Alpine Loop Run and Picnic will be held Saturday August 16, 2003. This is undeniably the club’s most popular event. It's always such fun to see
the looks on folks faces as we cruise through their part of town.

We will stick to the well proven plan of: Meeting at the southeast parking lot of the South Towne Mall on Saturday August 16, at 9:00 AM for a 10:00 AM departure. Folks from Utah County and south can meet up with the group at the Chevron station in Highland around 10:30 to 10:45 AM. There will be a chance to buy raffle tickets before departure and last minute ticket purchases at the Heber picnic area.

The trip starts at the South Towne Mall, onto the I-15 frontage road, and onto Utah Highway 92. Utah Highway 92 takes us east into American Fork Canyon and past Timpanogos cave. The road climbs steeply from there. At the summit we drop down past Deer Creek Reservoir and into good old Heber City. Here we meet at the park behind City Hall for lunch and the famous raffle! We then leave Heber, climb past the Jordanelle Reservoir (hopefully still with water in it!) and through Francis, Kamas, Oakley, Peoa, Brown's Canyon and into Park City. While in Park City we can make a practice run down main street to give the local's a taste of what to expect on Miner's Day! Then out towards K-Mart and Kimball Junction and I-80 for home!

This event is a big money raiser for our little group. Please be generous with your ticket purchases. And if you or your company have anything to donate to our raffle, we would love to have it. Bring the items along to the South Towne Mall on the day of the event, or contact Mitch Johnson ( spitfiresrule@msn.com ), or 801-547-1087.

You can bring a lunch or purchase it in Heber. Folding chairs or blankets are recommended (Heber usually waters the grass for us). Sunscreen is also a must for you that prefer going topless (the cars that is!).

This will be the first year in most everyone's memory that Karen Bradakis is not the coordinator. I only hope that I can pull off a fraction of the success that she has had with the Alpine Loop runs of the past!

Heber Valley Parade August 2
Here's a welcome chance to show off your Britmobile in a summer parade without roasting in the mid day sun. The event is one the BMCU has been well represented at for many years, the Heber Valley Parade, this year on Saturday August 2.

Rendezvous at the Smiths parking lot on Heber's main street by 5pm. About 5:30 we will drive to our position in the parade lineup, ready to roll at 6pm. After imitating Mr./Ms. Congeniality and waving to all our fans, we will chow down at our traditional restaurant stop, Don Pedros.

For any questions contact Doug Wimer, 435-654-2117.

Healey Days 2003
The Bonneville Austin-Healey Club is hosting a Classic Sports Car Show and a poker / gimmick rallye to commemorate the club's 20th anniversary. The show will be held on Saturday August 23, at the Radisson Inn in Park City. The "21 Poker Rallye" will start from the Radisson Inn on Sunday August 24.

The Classic Sports Car Show will run from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm. Classes for cars will be determined by numbers and types of cars that pre-register. Entrants will receive two door prize chances and ballots to vote for their favorite cars. Spectators will be asked to vote for the popular choice award. The Awards Ceremony will be at 4:00 pm.

The drivers' meeting for the "21 Poker Rallye" will be held at 10:00 am in the north parking lot of the Radisson Inn in Park City. The first car out for the rallye will leave at 10:30 am.

Pre-registration for both the show and rallye is $20.00. Individual events are $10.00 per car. Registration after August 16 will be $30.00 for both days or $15.00 for each event. For more information or to register call Dave or Sandy Maxwell at 801-943-4803.

GoF West 2004
GoF West 2004 will be held at the Harrison Hot Springs Resort and Spa in the mountains of British Columbia, Canada July 12-16 (I think). Keep an eye on www. GoFWest.com for confirmation and registration information. For more information on the venue take a look at www.harrisonresort.com .

The GoF West Steering Committee has confirmed the next several events. This is both good news and bad for the BMCU. They will hold 2005 at Buellton, California (home of Anderson Split Pea Soup and many fine wineries); 2006 with be held at Mt. Hood in Oregon. That is the good news. They have asked that the BMCU once again sponsor the event in 2007! ! ! !

BMCU Needs U
As the summer gets longer the articles for our newsletter get shorter. Now that most of our British cars have burned up for the summer, it would be a great time to tell us how that happened. Other articles would be good too.

Help us out and at the same time become a published author. Your name will go down in history on the Internet. I found one of these newsletters on the internet using GOOGLE by typing in “The 15th Alpine Loop Run”.

I know you have an interesting article you can submit. Pictures are OK. Triumph articles would be best, (they are the greatest cars) but I’ll take others. Send them to me, Jeff Porter at porterjeff@comcast.net
